One of the biggest hurdles to Trump’s vision of a new Middle East is that Israel is having none of it. While Trump touts his ceasefire, Israel has continued to bomb Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria. The formal project dates back to at least the 1823 Monroe Doctrine, when the United States unilaterally claimed Latin America as its exclusive sphere of influence. Larry Summers still has jobs because Larry Summers is exceedingly common. He’s not an outlier, he’s the freaking norm. He’s a guy in every C-Suite, on every hiring committee, in every mailroom.
